Databricks October 2026 update: window measures, Genie Code CLI and the features that matter

Rolling averages in metric views, an AI coding assistant in your terminal and charts pulled straight out of PDFs. The October changes worth knowing, with examples.

Databricks ships changes almost every day, which makes it hard to see what actually matters. October 2026 has been a busy month: nine features reached general availability in the first two weeks alone, alongside new AI tools and models. This round-up picks out what changes day-to-day work for analysts and analytics engineers, with examples you can copy.

Window measures in metric views (GA)

Metric views are Databricks' semantic layer: you define a measure such as revenue once, and dashboards, Genie and SQL all use the same definition. Until now, rolling and cumulative calculations had to be rewritten in every query. Window measures move them into the definition itself.

YAML
version: 1.1
source: samples.tpch.orders
dimensions:
  - name: date
    expr: o_orderdate
measures:
  - name: t7d_customers # rolling 7-day distinct customers
    expr: COUNT(DISTINCT o_custkey)
    window:
      - order: date
        range: trailing 7 day
        semiadditive: last
  - name: running_total_sales # cumulative revenue
    expr: SUM(o_totalprice)
    window:
      - order: date
        range: cumulative
        semiadditive: last

The range can be a trailing window such as trailing 7 day, cumulative, or a comparison period such as trailing 1 day for day-over-day growth. Because the logic lives in the metric view, every dashboard and every AI question that uses it gets the same answer.

AI and agents

Genie Code CLI (Beta)
Databricks' AI coding assistant in the terminal, for writing and fixing notebooks, SQL and pipelines from your own editor.
ai_parse_document charts
The document-parsing SQL function can now return the data behind charts in PDFs and images as JSON.
Agent memory pipelines (Beta)
Managed pipelines that let agents built on Databricks remember information between sessions.
Unity Gateway Skills API (Beta)
Manage reusable agent skills across the CLI and SDKs.
Code-first Agent Bricks
Documentation now centres on building agents in code; Knowledge Assistant and Supervisor Agent moved to legacy.
OpenJev as a judge (Beta)
A small model available for LLM-as-a-judge evaluation of agent answers.

Here is how chart extraction looks in SQL. It is ideal for turning reports and slide decks that only exist as PDFs back into data:

SQL
-- Parse every PDF in a volume and keep the extracted chart data
SELECT
  path,
  ai_parse_document(content) AS parsed
FROM READ_FILES('/Volumes/finance/reports/quarterly/', format => 'binaryFile');

Governance and data engineering

Key GA releases, October 2026

  1. Cross-engine ABAC

Attribute-based access control policies now apply across engines.

  2. JDBC Unity Catalog connections

Govern JDBC connections to external databases in Unity Catalog.

  3. Metric view window measures

    Rolling, cumulative and period-over-period measures.

  4. Discover page and domains

Browse and organise data assets by business domain.

  5. Lakeflow pipeline parameters, Feature Views, ingress policies

Parameterised pipelines, governed feature definitions and context-based network rules.

  6. On-demand state repartitioning

Rebalance streaming state without restarting from scratch.

  7. Package repositories for AppsNow

Workspace-level package repositories for Databricks Apps.

Models: what's new and what's retiring

Added

New on Unity Gateway
  • Claude Haiku 5.5 (7 October)
  • Gemini 4 Argon (13 October)
  • Amazon Bedrock Mantle models (9 October)
  • OpenJev, a Qwen3.5 4B model, pay-per-token

Retired or legacy

Plan a switch
  • Gemini 2.5 Pro and 2.5 Flash retired (2 October)
  • GLM 5.2 moved to legacy (6 October)
  • DeepSeek V4 Flash (0731) retires 5 November

Check any jobs or apps that call these model names.

What to do this month

  1. 1

Move rolling metrics into metric views

Find the 7-day, 28-day and year-to-date calculations repeated across dashboards and define them once as window measures.

  2. 2

Check model names in your code

Search jobs and apps for Gemini 2.5, GLM 5.2 and DeepSeek V4 Flash (0731) before they stop working.

  3. 3

Try Genie Code CLI on a side project

It is in Beta, so start with a non-critical repository.

  4. 4

    Review access policies

If you manage permissions across engines, cross-engine ABAC can replace duplicated rules.
